Turfan Turkic Fragment Mainz 317 belongs to the Book of the Giants - one of Manichaean scriptures. This piece deals with the flight of Mahway, one of the giants, to Enoch. Aramaic 4Q530 Fragment 2 Col. 2 of the Dead Sea Scrolls tells us a similar story: after a cosmic journey Mahway comes to Enoch and requests him to interpret the bad dreams of the giants. The content of Turkic fragments Mainz 460d, U44, U43, U42 and U40 is analogous to that of the Sermons of the Light-Nous, of which the Traite is a Chinese version. These fragments tell us how the New Man depends on five kinds of forces (love, faith, contentment, patience and wisdom) to defeat the enemy. The conflicts between evil powers and the five sons of the Living Spirit correlate to those within the individual as the New Man struggles with the Old. It is no coincidence that the Turkic fragment of the Book of the Giants belongs to the same manuscript as the Turkic fragments which are like the Sermons of the Light-Nous. The tales of the giants are presented as a parable for the challenge of the New on behalf of the Old Man who is tied up to his body. This may be the essentially religious message to be expected in Book of the Giants.
