阿罗汉信仰在北传大乘佛教(包括汉传及藏传佛教)流行地区影响深远,其中供奉十六阿罗汉是这一信仰中的一条主线。但对于十六阿罗汉信仰在汉、藏佛教之间的交涉,目前学术界尚无深入研究。笔者在翻译一部藏文文献过程中遇到藏传十六阿罗汉名称与汉传佛教名称之间的差异问题,如何在准确对译藏文名称的同时,与汉文佛教典籍中已有的传统译名取得对应关系,成为这一翻译项目中的一个难题。本文将以十六阿罗汉名称差异问题为核心,以文献比较学与经典释义学为基础,重点介绍十六阿罗汉名称在藏传佛教典籍中呈现的情况,诠释一种新的翻译方法论并分享研究过程中所发现的一些有趣现象。
The worship of Arhats has gained a popularity in the Northern Mahayana Buddhists (both Han Buddhists and Tibetan Buddhists) lands in the history. This tradition is centralized with the worship of sixteen special Arhat figures. Less scholarly researches have been made on this important phenomena even lesser on the exchange of this worship between the Chinese and Tibetan traditions. The author will present here his new translation methodology based on textual collation and hermeneutics, and the final production of a new set of Buddhist proper names translation, along dealing with an obvious difference of the names of the Sixteen Arhats when he was translating a Tibetan Sixteen Arhat sadhana text. He will also share his related research on the names of the Sixteen Arhats in Tibetan tradition, and interesting findings along that translation project.
