For improvement in the efficiency of brown planthopper control, the criteria for chemical application basing on the pest population growth model and the economic threshold were determined on the one hand, and the prevelence of major natural enemies were investigated and low toxicity insecticides to the natural agents were evaluated on the other hand. Basing on these information, the hopper can be properly controlled with a half reduction of insecticide applications as compared with conventional control method. In order to further decressing the use of insecticide, the brown planthopper resistant cartivars were developed and the measures for preventing the development of virulent biotypes of the hopper were evaluated during the past decate. Through a series experiments, a simple combination of resistant carrtivar and insecticide application basing on timing and economic threshold provided the most reliable way not only for controlling the hopper and the other rice insect pests, but also for preserving the natural enemies. The profit of pest control basing on integrated control tacties were always higher than that basing on insecticides and calendar dating presently.
