The family Scarabaeidae is generally divided into the divisions Laparosticti (Coprophagides) and Pleurosticti (Melolonthides). Most of the members of the former division are saprophagous or necrophagous species. Approximately 180 species of Laparosticti are known from Taiwan. The latter division consists only of phytophagous species and includes some notorious agricultural pest insects such as chafers and the sugar beetle. The largest beetle in Taiwan the long armed beetle Cheirotomus macleayi also belongs to this division. At the present, 360 species of phytophagous pleurosticti beetles have been recorded from Taiwan. Scientific names and Chinese common names of the Pleurosticti (Scarabaeidae) are given. In addition, an index of Chinese names of the Pleurosticti beetles is also provided.
