TTE CHRONOLOGIES OF THE LIFE OF T'AO YÜAN-MING COLLATED

About T'ao Yüan-ming's life and works more than ten books have been written which are called variously "biography" (傳), "personal chronology" (年譜) and "comparative studies" of such personal chronologies (年譜考異). These writers often overstretch their imagination and indulge in recriminatory criticism of one another, without either giving accurate details of the poet's life or gaining a real insight into his works. In writing the present article I have consulted over two hundred authors, from the Tsin (晋) and Liu-Sung (劉宋) period onward, and made a meticulous study of the real tenor of T'ao Yüan-ming's writings by checking them against events of the time in a methodical and penetrating manner. Here my main purpose is to collate former works on T'ao Yüan-ming's life and to make a new, systematic presentation of the facts. One feature of this article is the arrangement of the chronological details of the poet's life according to the dates of his poems and essays. It is hoped that this article will serve as a key to all the other relevant writings and thus facilitate research on T'ao Yüan-ming's literary works.
