Position-taking Strategies and Capital Collusion: The "Wang Xiaobo Narratives" in the China's "Mengya" Magazine

The "Wang Xiaobo Phenomenon" originated from the end of the last century to the beginning of the twenty-first century, in a time when the field of contemporary Chinese literature was dramatically changing. It appeared as a series of mis-readings of Wang Xiaobo's works from different social classes, under the influence of mass media. "Mengya", one of China's most popular youth literature magazines, presented a "textual carnival" of "Wang Xiaobo Narratives". The contributors and editors of the magazine published many literary productions that were clearly influenced by Wang, as a form of paying tribute to him. They touched on Wang's works, imitating, citing and discussing about them. Given that there were many similarities between Wang and themselves on the positions they had in the field of culture production, the contributors believed that they could raise their status by "deifying" Wang, therefore, they placed great significance on "Wang Xiaobo narratives" in their magazine. The authors of "Mengya" gave silent consent to publishing mis-readings of Wang Xiaobo, to retain their status in the literary field. The authors also learned and inherited the reflected "Wang style" in the magazine.
