3D printing is an additive process. Compared with subtractive manufacturing, only the materials needed are given where needed. On-demand manufacturing technology is always intuitively recognized as a green manufacturing technology and has environmentally sustainable advantages. However, 3D printing technology needs to be evaluated and analyzed more rigorously, considering the entire life cycle and end-to-end sustainability, and fully evaluating the entire life cycle of the 3D printing industry in terms of materials, equipment energy consumption, supply chain, and recycling. The true environmental sustainability benefits of 3D printing manufacturing compared with traditional manufacturing will accelerate technology adoption in application industries. Although there are still more challenges, it is also another opportunity for growth.
