This paper analyzes Ven. Master Hsing Yun's teachings on volunteerism through scholar Weijen Teng's theory of three types of pure land (implicit, explicit and intuitional) in Humanistic Buddhism. We find that Ven. Master Hsing Yun's teachings provides the doctrinal and ethical basis to motivate devotees to volunteer their time. And the organizational structure of Foguangshan offers the institutional dimension for volunteerism. In the discourse of Ven. Master Hsing Yun's teachings, volunteerism in Foguangshan is a form of Buddhist spiritual practice and it is without the distinguish between the sacred and profane.
