元大都中書省址考

Locations of the Zhongshusheng of the Yuan Capital Dadu

並列摘要

Established in 1267 (the fouth year of the Zhiyuan 至元 era), the Zhongshusheng 中書省 (Office of the Central Secretariat) of the Yuan dynasty was located north of the Fengchi Lane 鳳池坊 , northwest of the Inner City (宮城) of the capital Dadu, close to the Bell Tower (鐘樓) in the east. Its ruin stands at the north end of today's Jiu Gulou Dajie 舊古樓大街 , outside the Bei Erhuan Road. In 1270 (the seventh year of the Zhiyuan era), another administrative department called Shangshusheng 尚書省 was set up at the Wuyun Lane 五雲坊 , southeast of the Inner City, near today's People's Cultural Palace (the Imperial Ancestral Temple of the Ming and Qing dynasties). ln 1290 (the twenty-seventh year of the Zhiyuan era), offices of the Zhongshusheng were incorporated into the Shangshusheng, and were called Nansheng 南省 , corresponding to the Beisheng 北省 at the Fengchi Lane. In 1307 (the eleventh year of the Dade 大德 era), Zhongshusheng was returned to the Fengchi Lane, and moved back again to the Wuyun Lane in the following year (1308, the second year of the Zhishun 至順 era); the old offices of the Zhongshusheng at the Fengchi Lane were then taken over by the Hanlinyuan 翰林院 till the end of the dynasty. The change of the locations of the Zhongshusheng was a typical development which attests to the overall rational planning of the grand capital.
