On the Structure of the ＂Fourteen Pusaman Ci Poems＂ by Wen Tingyun

The ＂Fourteen Pusaman Ci Poems＂ by. Wen Tingyun (c. 812-870) have always enjoyed popularity among readers of Chinese literature. But whether or not the theme in the individual poems is related has been a subject of debate ever since it was raised by Zhang Huiyan (1761-1802). Some scholars opined that they are lianzhang ci, i.e, a cycle of ci of the same tune with the same theme; others suggested they are zu ci, i.e., ci of the same tune but with different themes, and yet others thought that they are Wen's random works and the themes in the fourteen poems are not interrelated. After a thorough research and consulting the findings of scholars past and present, the author concludes that these fourteen ci are zu ci, and not lianzhang ci.
