Phonological Glosses in the Hanyu Da Zidian

Published over a period of time from 1986 to 1990, the Hanyu da zidian 漢語大字典 (Dictionary of Chinese Characters) in eight volumes is one of the most comprehensive zidian 字典 (character dictionaries) ever compiled. It was meticulously edited and it takes a patient reader to find the odd error. Although its phonological glosses also show the same care, an important shortcoming should be pointed out: a character appearing in a classical work is likely to have two types of pronunciation. The first is in accordance with the pronunciation given by the fanqie 反切 spelling in a rhyme book such as the Guangyun 廣韻 where no contextual usage is offered. The second is in accordance with the fanqie spelling given in the Jingdian shiwen 經典釋文 or other works whose aim is to help the reader use the correct pronunciation in the given context. The reader's attention is here drawn to the fact that the Hanyu da zidian prefers the former while scholars tend to prefer the latter. The occasional error and omission as well as misprint in the dictionary are also noted.
