The Beijing Tongwenguan and Translation in the Late Qing

The Beijing Tongwenguan, the first modern language school of China, was established in 1862 as part of the Self-Strengthening programme for the training of translators and interpreters. As its establishment, activities and functions were closely related to the politics of the late Qing, in particular its reform movement, there exist quite a number of studies on the School. But not much has been done on the training of the translators and their translation activities. The present article studies the role played by the Beijing Tongwenguan in the translation history of modern China. It also takes the School as a case study to examine the intricate relationship between translation and politics.
