Background. A prolactinoma is the most common type of pituitary functional adenoma, with an annual incidence of approximately 30 persons per 100,000 population. The most typical symptoms of pituitary tumor are headache and visual field defect. Meanwhile, macroprolactinomas are tumors with a diameter of more than 1 cm. The symptoms are commonly due to excessive prolactin production, the tumor itself, and the compression of adjacent neural structures. Methods. We report the clinical features and imaging findings of a 64-year-old woman with a huge prolactinoma. Results. A 64-year-old postmenopausal woman was brought to our emergency department owing to sudden memory loss. Computed tomography of the brain showed a huge pituitary tumor in the sella, extending to the suprasellar and left inferior frontal areas. The tumor was removed surgically, and prolactin level decreased gradually with continued medical treatment. Conclusion. A prolactinoma is the most common pituitary tumor. Early detection may improve clinical outcomes and reduce the risk of complications.
