This review brings together both the history and new directions in the study of Daoism in the later Northern Song and Southern Song periods. It covers research carried on in China, Japan, Europe, and the U.S. Five major thematic areas of study are included-the interaction between Daoism and politics (especially in the matter of national rituals); interactions between intellectuals, monks, and Daoists, and the syncretism of the Three Teachings; sects, Daoist priests, and Daoist ritual; regional studies and Daoist geography; Daoist arts.
