This article deals with Chinese words that have been assimilated into the English language during the several centuries of contact. After a brief historical account, four loan words are analyzed in depth: China, silk, tea, and typhoon. A larger vocabulary of loan words will follow in the next issue as An Anglo-Chinese Glossary.
本文谈的汉语词,是几个世纪以来中英语言长期接触中被英语吸收的借词。文章简要地追述了历史事实之后,着重分析了四个借词:China(中国、磁器)、silk(丝、绸)、tea(茶[叶])和typhoon(台风)。本刊下期《英语汉语词词汇》一文将列举更多的这种借词。
