Whereas institutionalized religions are based on a belief in gods, Bataille sought to establish a theology without gods, which he called atheologique. Atheologique aims at revealing the sacred experience obscured by gods, which should be the supreme dimension belonging to all man and Bataille called sovereignty. For Bataille, sovereignty as sacred experience is absolute freedom getting rid of every limitation of purpose and interest, every relation of dependence. Human longing for absolute freedom is the source of religious feeling. By anthropological investigation of the existence of archaic human, Bataille demonstrated tellingly this view and also criticized acutely institutionalized religions and kingship of human society.
