The Bible had a tremendous influence on medieval English literature. The important Alliterative Revival movement, which flourished after the mid-fourteenth century, was also no exception. The three poems of the Pearl-poet, Cleanness, Patience, and Pearl, are not only thematically based on Christian doctrines, and they also depend on the Bible for material. The narratives in Cleanness and Patience are virtually Old Testament stories and the controlling materials of Pearl are taken from Matthew and Revelation. These biblical stories and materials greatly develop the themes of these works, enrich their cultural significance, and increase their literary values.
