Paul Ricoeur's Theology of Biblical Intertextuality
摘要

Abstract: In dealing with the biblical texts, Ricoeur often emphasizes the role of the narrative genre. It is for the sake of articulating its special role in the phenomenon of intertextuality, the interaction between different biblical genres. Ricoeur seems to suggest that in this literary phenomenon God's foundational work in the faith community is remembered and redescrihed, thus for them the living Word is handed down to the succeeding generations. Hence the transformative reading invoked in intertextuality was not an artificial import, but a theological mechanism existing in the Scripture. Interpreting the Scripture is the occasion of reiterating the living Word, and a kind of biblical theology based on the phenomenon of intertextuality could be constructed henceforth. Nevertheless, the original readers and the contemporary audiences have different contexts and responses. If they share any similarities, it should be that they belong to the same historic faith community. They have the responsibility to testify to the foundational events in history. and this is deeply related to the constitution of the self-identity of the community. This may explain why Ricoeur have gradually turned his discussion more closely to narratology and engaged more with the pragmatic dimension of the readers Since 1980s. Ricoeur's insights from Time and Narrative and other writings of the same period reveal that the relationship among biblical interpretation, theological construction and the traditions of faith community are full of tension which is affecting the constitution of the interpreters' identity. But it is also open to creative brand new possibilities through the use of our practical wisdom.
