In terms of Three-stage Model of Role Development in sociology, role transformation is closely examined in the crisis initiated in the Book of Ruth. It is presumed that the crisis stimulates the plot evolution and thereby, the role transformation. During this course, the characters continuously adopt new roles, which lead to the ambiguity and flexibility in the character's roles, especially the role of gender. On the other hand, the people in the story adjust themselves by acquiring more abilities and strength from the existing environment to deal with crisis. The role transformation in the Book of Ruth has explicitly demonstrated this feature. This paper suggests that crisis and role transformation are in tense relationship, while interacting with each other, with the former stimulating the latter, and the latter, which embraces powerful social functions, as a rational means of dissolving crises.
