The Translation Thought of Derrida's "Des Tours de Babel"

Concentrated on the dilemma around "Babel," which on one hand signifies "confusion", on the other hand is the name of God himself, Derrida's "Des Tours des Babel" demonstrates the impossibility and necessity of translation. In naming and then deconstructing the tower of Babel, God destroys the Semitic ambition of establishing a universal language, and also constrains Jews to the law of translation. Inspired by Walter Benjamin's essay "The Task of the Translator", Derrida argues that translation is like a debt which could neither be representative nor reproductive. After all, it is an interpretation which promises a kingdom to the reconciliation of languages; it is the promise of adjoining, coupling, and marrying two languages like two parts of a greater whole.
