The Essays and Reviews (1860) posed a shock to the British society even greater than The Origin of Species. The seven authors of the book were criticized as "Septum Contra Christum". In the book, they defy the prevailing views of" biblical infallibility" by explaining their ideas of how to meet the challenges coming from the scientific discovery and what are the right principles and methods for biblical interpretation. Their ideas explained in the book were regarded as non-religious and noxious to the Christian faith at that time, but are widely taken for granted nowadays.
