This essay presents a literary analysis of Genesis 38 (the story of Judah and Tamar), to show how the chapter foreshadows the development of the Joseph narrative. It first suggests that Genesis 38 fits an "Ideal Narrative" model in terms of its narrative frame, and on this basis, proposes an "Event Initiated Structure" for the chapter, arguing that the entire Joseph narrative also fits this structure, and that Chapter 38 prefigures the narrative frame of the Joseph story. The essay then analyzes the narration techniques of Genesis 38, showing how the Narrator connects Genesis 38 with the Joseph narrative by repeating keywords and character portrayals, and by depicting the type character of Judah, which also appears in the Joseph narrative.
