The Story of the Stone (alias The Dream of the Red Chamber) is a work of revelation. This study starts with revealing the hidden meanings of the word "herbal medicine" as it is suggested by Shi Xianyun to Xiangling as reply to the "cover-ups" (she-fu) game. The author mourned for the fall of the Ming Dynasty through many "riddles" such as using Xiangling and her other two names in the beginning and the end of the "Eighty chapters version" of The Story of the Stone. In addition to Xiangling's various names, the words of judgment of Wang Xifeng, especially the line "'Two' makes my riddle with a man and tree," served the same purpose as to mourn for the fall of the Ming Dynasty. Lu Xun knew that The Dream of the Red Chamber was inspired by Dai Fugu's Twenty-Four Varieties of Poetry, and therefore Lu Xun revealed these ideas in his short stories. However, except Zhou Zuoren, his contemporaries did not understand his short stories.
