Tian Han (1898-1968) is one of the most prominent dramatists of modern Chinese literature. His early plays give detailed discussion on women's liberation as well as love and marriage problems which aroused great concern in the May Fourth Period. Tian studied in Tokyo for six years so that his sojourn in Japan became an important starting point of his literary life. Women's liberation was popular in the Taisho Period and was considered as the zeitgeist. Feminist incidents that happened in Japanese society and feminist theories adopted from the West provided real life and theoretical basis to Tian's early works. By examining Tian's evaluation towards feminist incidents in Japan and his introduction of feminist theories abroad, this research aims to bring to light the sources of thought of Tian's early plays and show how they deeply influenced Tian's thoughts and works. This research first discusses Tian's reviews on feminist incidents in the Taisho Period; then examines Tian's introduction, reception and evaluation of feminist theories; and finally analyzes its relation with Tian's early plays. In this way, this research aims to give a comprehensive understanding of Tian Han's early creative works and thoughts, in order to provide another methodology to analyze Tian's works, as well as give a reinterpretation of his life history, essays and plays, and finally emphasize his pioneering contribution towards the formation of modern Chinese feminist theories.
