Portugal started the Age of Discovery in the 15th century. The Portuguese formally settled in Macau in 1557. Later, due to the expansion of the scope of trade activities during the Portuguese colonial expansion, China and Portugal signed a land lease agreement with Macau in 1582. It was not until December 1887 that the Qing government and the Kingdom of Portugal signed the Sino-Portuguese Treaty of Friendship and Trade, which confirmed that Portugal could be stationed in Macau for permanent administration. Over the past four hundred years, Macau has not only been under the management of the Portuguese, but also the ideology and architectural style of urban construction and urban planning have also been affected to varying degrees. The Calcada Portuguesa with urban characteristics is also one of them. This article discusses the development history, craft materials, and application examples of Portuguese gravel roads between Lisbon and Macau, summarizes the similarities and differences between the two, and provides references for subsequent Portuguese paving designs.
