摘要

This paper analyzes the rigid and supple features of English and Chinese from the perspective of contrastive studies of English and Chinese. Examples are selected from The Border Town and its English version. The rigid feature of English is reflected by the rigorous subject-predicate. English sentences present the characteristics like distinct principal and subordinate, clear hierarchy, multi-layer progressive, close-knit and standardized, etc. And the sentence pattern is "compactness". While the supple feature of Chinese is clarified from lacking of rigorous subject-predicate structure and are full of run-on sentences. Chinese sentences are characterized by indistinguishable subject and predicate, indistinguishable subject and subordinate, flowing and arranging, disorganized form and concentrated spirit, and full of elastic meaning , so its sentence pattern is "disffusiveness".
