A STUDY OF CONFLICT TALKS BETWEEN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS IN THE JOY LUCK CLUB

摘要

Conflict talks are very common in daily life. When people have different views on the same thing, there will be differences and arguments, and then there may be conflicting words. From the perspective of language adaptation theory, the language choices of both parties are adapted to the contextual factors. If the language choices between the two parties are adapted to each other, verbal communication can proceed smoothly without conflicting words. However, in some cases, the language choice of the interlocutor may not adapt to certain contextual factors, which may lead to conflicting discourse. The Joy Luck Club mainly tells the contradiction and estrangement between four pairs of mothers and daughters, and there are many conflicting words between them, so it is of significance to study. Based on the theory of Adaptation Theory, this paper takes the Conflict talks between mothers and daughters in The Joy Luck Club as the corpus and analyzes how the Conflict talks between mothers and daughters occur and what causes it. According to the adaptation theory, the main reason for the conflict between mother-daughter lies in the fact that their physical world, social world, and mental world have not been adapted. Understanding the causes of conflicting words will help to reduce and avoid conflicts and promote mutual understanding and communication between mothers and daughters.
