With the promulation of the "plastic limit order" in 2017, China's plastic industry fell into a short silence, looking for biodegradable plastics with excellent performance has once again become the main way for the development of the plastic industry. 1, 4‐butanediol is a saturated diol, or BDO for short. It is an important organic chemical raw material, especially its derivative polybutyrate resin is recognized as a completely biodegradable plastic. BDO and its derivatives have become the current focus of attention, making it a star product in the chemical industry. There are four methods of industrial synthesis of BDO: Reppe method, butadiene method, propylene oxide method and tetra anhydride method. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these four synthetic processes in practical production from the characteristics of the synthetic process and the required raw materials. In terms of resource distribution, reasonable location selection is put forward in terms of Chinese science and technology, and it is concluded that China is more suitable for developing Reppe method to produce BDO. Then, based on the analysis of the reasons for BDO price changes caused by domestic and foreign policies and the prediction of the future development of THE BDO industry, the price of BDO products will fluctuate with the stability of saturated capacity and international influential demand in the short term. However, the price of BDO will eventually stabilize and biodegradable plastics will largely replace the traditional ones. The BDO industry is still full of hope in the future.
