With the deepening of oil exploration and development, the difficulty of exploitation is gradually increasing. For secondary oil recovery failed to produce residual oil, adding surfactant to chemical flooding is an important technical means to improve oil recovery. However, most of the existing clean fracturing fluids use single-chain surfactant as thickener, which has poor temperature resistance and is limited in use. To solve this problem, according to the different molecular structures of amphoteric surfactants, the amphoteric surfactants synthesized in recent years can be divided into two types: single-chain type and double-chain type. Amphoteric surfactants are more closely arranged between molecules, more healthy and environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and have broad research space. The synthesis and performance application of zwitterionic Gemini surfactants were emphatically introduced. Finally, the shortcomings of the current research on amphoteric surfactants were pointed out, and the future research direction and focus were prospected.
