English Translation Norms of Tibetan Place Names and Tibetan Buddhist Cultural Images

摘要

The College English Test-6(CET-6) in December 2020 occupied the Sina Weibo's list of top trending searches. A candidate for CET-6 made a hilarious mistake, he translated the English name of Tibet into "Yalaso", which derived from the song of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(Yalaso, that is the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau) created by Abao. And some netizens popularized the English translation of Xizang Autonomous Region is Tibet, which made some people confused, because they thought Tibet is the English name of Taipei. Indeed, sometimes our Chinese people would mix English letters with pinyin, and some non- English learners may have wrong associations with Chinese and English homophonic words. Tibet is located in a remote part of China, and its great distance and high altitude make it shrouded in a veil of mystery, making it unknown to mainlanders, not to mention foreigners. As the Chinese often confuse some English names related to Tibetan culture, this article will introduce some English translation of Tibetan place names and common images in Tibetan Buddhism for the purpose of popularizing Tibetan culture, promoting national unity and defending Chinese sovereignty.
