As a representative of the current popular large-scale language models, ChatGPT is rapidly empowering various industries. Within the field of higher education, ChatGPT can have certain positive spillover effects on student learning and faculty teaching. This is particularly true for academic postgraduate students who are new to the field of academia, as ChatGPT positively influences their adherence to academic norms and their thesis writing. However, it should also be noted that ChatGPT is essentially the product of extensive training on internet corpora, which may involve risks related to intellectual property, academic integrity, and other issues that could undermine graduate students' commitment to academic norms and the quality of their dissertation writing. Therefore, it is crucial to guide postgraduate students in the appropriate use of ChatGPT to support their adherence to academic norms and thesis writing while avoiding potential academic ethics violations and other risks.
