The Social Structure of Sarawak Chinese under British Colonial Rule with Reference to The Chinese of Sarawak: A Study of Social Structure by Dr. Tien Ju Kang

Five years after the Second World War (1946-1950), a time of drastic changes throughout the world, Sarawak was converted from a land that was ruled by a British family to that of a colony under British rule. The transition to Crown colony status took place when Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke ceded the state to Britain in 1946. The British colonial government in Sarawak, with its multi-ethnic population, was concerned with the economic role of the Chinese, their political loyalties and their co-existence with other communities within Sarawak. Tien Ju Kang, a social anthropologist, was sent by the British colonial government to study the Chinese community of Sarawak. His research in Sarawak was focused on the role of associations in the Chinese community and their economic role. His report was submitted to the Social Science Research Council in England, and subsequently published as a monograph. Despite some omissions such as the interaction between the Chinese and the natives, the influence of Christianity among the Chinese migrants and the Foochow community in Sibu, Tien's report sheds considerable light on the sociological experience of the Chinese of Sarawak. It has become a classic on the Chinese in Sarawak widely read and frequently quoted in the academic world. The report serves is a landmark research on Sarawak Chinese and provides insights on the social structure of Sarawak Chinese during the British colonial period.
