History of "Bukit Mor New Village" and the Malayan Communist Party Activities During That Period

Bukit Mor New Village was set up in 1950, and in 1954 it was declared a 'white area'. The villagers henceforth regained their freedom. During the setup of the new village, Chinese villagers from around Bukit Mor area were all forced to leave, and a fence was put up around Bukit Mor to form a new village. Most Chinese villagers from the surrounding areas moved into the new village. Public amenities in the village were scarce, and the villagers' livelihood was strictly under control. Apart from this, resources were limited. The frequent gunfights between the communists and the British armies, and the threats and intimidation from both sides, added even more trauma to the villagers. In fact, before the Emergency period, there was already intense anti-Chinese sentiments. There were rampant killing and arson by the Malay community. It was the communists then that protected them, and prevented the conflict from escalating. Regardless of before or after the setup of the new village, it is important to take into consideration the activities of the communists within the region. Therefore, this paper's narration shall start from the Chinese settlement before the new village, including the activities of the communists, and conclude with a thorough account of the new village and the villagers' livelihood within it. By doing this, we hope to re-construct the history of Bukit Mor during this period.
