Tangkak is a sub-district of Muar before it was upgraded to a full-fledged district in the Johor state of Malaysia. The estimated population in Tangkak is about 133,000, comprising 56.3% Malays and 33% Chinese. Tangkak has approximately 71 villages and 21 Chinese primary schools. In Malaysia, Chinese education is sponsored and supported by the local Chinese community through fund raising. Therefore, any changes in the Chinese community will indirectly affect the financial sponsorship of the local Chinese schools. This paper will discuss the historical development and the current situation of the Tangkak Chinese community as well as their Chinese education system, taking SJK(C) Belemang, a local Chinese primary school as an example. Through interviews and written records, we will try to analyse and gain insight into its background, administration and funding and use them as yardsticks to evaluate future education development and social changes in the local community.
