Tangkak is well-known for its textile trade. This trade began along Jalan Payamas which became known as "Fabric Street" among the local people. It has also been christened "City of Textile" by the Sultan of Johor. During the height of the textile trade in this area, there were at least thirty fabric warehouses along Jalan Payamas. Of these fourteen are still operating, out of which eight are operated by the Yongchun community from south Fujian province. Tangkak is largely a town of the Hokkien dialect group of which the Yongchun community makes up the majority of the population. The textile trade originated with and later developed by the Yongchun traders who have contributed much to the growth of the town. This study is focused on the close relations between the Yongchun and the textile trade, and attention is also given to the development, challenges and future prospects of the local textile trade.
