Secret societies played a very important role in early Malaysian Chinese society. Since then, secret societies had undergone a period of government suppression and subsequently is at a low ebb. It was even thought that it could not escape the fate of being eliminated. Currently, secret societies still exist and would appear under the names of legitimate associations. In addition, secret societies generally exist in Chinese society and has had a profound impact on the development of local society. By focusing on the example of Jementah, located in the district of Segamat in Johor state, this article discusses the new trend of secret societies registering as legal associations, as well as the local development and influence of these secret societies. At present, Jementah has six secret societies registered as legal associations. However, it has achieved little in terms of organizational development. This is related to the lack of thorough transformation, development blueprints, and platforms to enhance its influence. In addition, the secret societies of Jementah have a considerable influence on the development of local political parties, community relations, temples, and associations, reflecting that local history research cannot ignore the role of secret societies.
