Since the late Spring and Autumn Period until the outbreak of the Rebellion of Dong Zhuo(董卓)at the end of Han Dynasty, there was no major war near Wancheng(皖城)for hundreds of years. During the period of Three Kingdoms, due to the geographical pattern of warfare in China changing from east-west confrontation to north-south confrontation, Wancheng area was frequently contested by Wu(吴)and Wei(魏), and its military status had risen sharply. Being the location of Wancheng, Lujiang(庐江) was located between Yangtze River and Huai River, and was the intersection of land and water channels, thus attracting the attention from all parties. However, because the road in this area alternates between water and land, ships can not sail directly to Yangtze and Huai Rivers, meanwhile, Wancheng was located in flat place, there was no natural barrier for its defense, therefore, it's just a secondary battleground for the competition between Wu and Wei.
