AN ANALYSIS OF THE FEATURES OF CHINESE AND ENGLISH DYNAMIC AND STATIC LANGUAGES--A Case Study of Border Town Translated by Jeffrey C. Kinkley

摘要

Jeffrey C. Kinkley, an American Sinologist, has studied Shen Congwen since the 1970s. He not only wrote the praiseworthy biography of Shen Congwen, but also translated Shen's representative work Border Town into English, which has become the best of the four English versions of Border Town. Taking Kinkley's English version as an example, this paper investigated the dynamic and static features between Chinese and English combining the surface features of them and the differences in ways of thinking. Finally, it is found that the process of translation between Chinese and English is also the process of transforming "dynamic" into "static" or "static" into "dynamic", which is an important reason why the translated text is closer to the target culture. Therefore, translators should give full consideration to this feature in their translation tasks in order to make more excellent Chinese culture "going out" successfully.
