"Gateway to Mandarin Chinese" emphasizes more on speaking skill rather than writing the Chinese characters. There are three levels of learning Chinese language, and each level has a set of "Chinese Characters Exercise Book" as teaching materials. An evaluation of the selection of Chinese characters for writing practices was done based on the aspects of word frequency, implication rate, words-forming ability, numbers of word strokes, and the structure of the characters. The conclusion is that the five aspects highlight the superiority of its selection. The issue of composing other than word selection is also discussed. There is also lacking of consistency between each book, especially the third book with the other two books are obviously was not well coordinated. Besides, it is suggested to further improve the contents of the knowledge of Chinese characters in the "Chinese Characters Exercise Book".
