In the Spotlight: A Critical Assessment of Michael Berry's Translation of Wu He's Remains of Life

摘要

This paper is a critical examination of Michael Berry's recent translation of Wuhe's(舞鶴)acclaimed novel Yusheng(餘生) (translated by Berry as Remains of Life). The paper is divided into three main parts. In the first, we consider the paratext of Berry's translation; in the second, we attempt to gauge whether Berry's translation is a reliable one; in the third, we take a closer look at whether Berry was correct in trying to follow faithfully the punctuation of the source text. At the end of our paper, we reach the conclusion that admirable as Berry's translation is, it suffers from a number of defects that need to be addressed.
