In so far as segments are concerned, 6 kinds of Cantonese phonological variation are widely mentioned in academic literature as well as discourses by laymen. The 6 are respectively alveolarization of velar codas (-2), de-labialization of labialized velars (-1), realization of onset ŋ- as glottal stop (+1), realization of onset n- as [l] (+2), realization of glottal stop onset in lexical morphemes (as opposed to grammatical morphemes) as [ŋ] (+3), and bilabialization of syllabic velar nasals (+4). This is an academic report based on the deliberation, analysis, discussion and practice of the group. We consider the relative public acceptability of the 6, arrive at the above rank order of them denoted as "-2" to "+4", draw the line of acceptance with "+/-", and register the bases of such ranking and demarcation.
