There are many familiar patriarchal narratives in Genesis, among which the narratives of Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph are the most moving, but in the middle, Isaac seems to be neglected. Perhaps the best known of his stories is his sacrifice by Abraham (Gen 22). But even in this narrative, the reader's attention mostly focus on Abraham, and sympathizes with an elderly father who faces the test of God's demand that he sacrifices his beloved son. The role of Isaac as patriarch in the Genesis traditions is mostly obscure to the reader. This paper attempts to present Isaac as a distinct character, trying to restore the characteristics of this vivid patriarch that the final editors of Genesis expect the reader to recognize. In this way, the reader is invited to pay more attention to the many "minor characters" or "little characters" in the Bible's narrative, often sketchily described but integral to the overall salvation narrative This paper will focus on the interpretation of Gen 24-26 and will introduce the marriage of Isaac, which originated at the "well", and how Isaac dealt with the crisis that arose around the "well". Because of the importance of the "well" in Isaac's life, he could indeed be called the patriarch of the "well".
