This article explores the ethical and juridical foundations of clerical celibacy in the light of the current Code of Canon Law and recent Church teachings. It focuses on the connection between the legal and sacramental nature of clerical celibacy; the conceptual and juridical distinction between chastity and celibacy; and how to confront the secularization that threatens clergy' chastity. The article emphasizes that clergy need not only emotional and devotional maturity, but also prudence and moderation in order to live well in celibacy.
