In 1977, Prof Edwin Thumboo wrote: "Gradually as the literature in each language enlarges its vision, its view of things to take in the whole of life in Singapore, then we would have reached a point where we have a Singapore Writing." Prof Thumboo's prediction has come true. This is not only the first step of developing a new literature in Englishes, it is also an important process to give birth many kinds of literatures in Chinese. The term "many kinds of Chinese" means that there are not only many kinds of Chinese people, there are also many different kinds of Chinese languages and cultures. Therefore, like the literatures in Englishes, there are many kinds of literatures in Chineses. In this paper I would discuss the works by two Malaysian Chinese writers who have subverted the dominating ideology and practice of Chinese literature. Today there are few writers who have only reflected and flattered the prejudices of their race. More and more Chinese writers have crossed the boundary of their community and enlarged the view to the lives of other ethnic communities. The development of localization, globalization and multiculturalism would bring stronger social ties among the various races and these new Chinese literatures would have more space to grow. A discussion of the fictional works of Li Yongping and Shang Wanyun in this context is useful. Li Yongping is born and brought up in Kuching, Sarawak. A number of stories included in Native of Borneo are dealing with his nostalgic childhood memories of Chinese, the British, Indian Malay and other indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak. A sociological analysis of mix-marriages, multi-ethnic social interactions shows that Sarawak has reached the highest degree of social integration among all the Malaysian states. Therefore literature growing up from the soil of Sarawak is a mirror reflecting the new landscape of the changing Chinese literature which embraces multi-racial communities in Malaysia. Most of Shang Wanyun's best stories draw the inspiration from her home town Baling and explore the life styles of Chinese, Malay, India and Thai communities. A number of stories included in A Lian the Idiot and The Fleas are about returning journeys to her home town Baling near the Malaysia and Thai border area. Baling is a widely known place where different ethnic groups live together without the strife that has become symbol of plural societies.
