Space Transformation and Management Strategies for Old House Restoration: A Case Study of Lukang Private Residence in Changhua

This study aims to delve into how Taiwan's architectural styles reflect the island's rich historical context and the interweaving of diverse cultures, with a particular focus on the traditional residential houses in the Lukang area of Changhua. It assesses the impact of urbanization and commercial expansion on historical buildings, especially those on the brink of demolition or decaying due to poor maintenance. The objective is to develop and evaluate a set of restoration and renewal strategies aimed at preserving these buildings of historical significance while updating them to meet contemporary living and functional needs. The research employs an interdisciplinary approach combining architectural history and restoration engineering, integrating site-specific historic building conservation techniques, and considering current environmental sustainability requirements. Emphasis is placed on the conservation of original materials, assessment of structural integrity, and integration of modern energy-saving technologies. The study uses the residential houses in the Lukang area of Changhua as case studies, conducting on-site inspections, architectural surveying, structural analysis, and historical documentation research. The sustainable materials and technologies applied also provide feasible green solutions for modern architectural design. Through these restoration cases, the research reveals how old houses can be transformed into platforms that enhance community cohesion, cultural identity, and economic revitalization. The findings demonstrate that appropriate restoration and renewal strategies can not only extend the life of buildings but also transform them into important resources for local social and economic development. These strategies, while respecting tradition, also encourage innovative design thinking and promote ongoing attention and protection for historic buildings, further reinforcing societal appreciation for the value of historical and cultural heritage.
