Fang Beifang's anti-colonial view of education in the context of Nonya and Baba

When Fang Beifang created Nonya and Baba, Malaysian Chinese language education was being challenged. In his novel, Fang Beifang conveys his views on the choice of language education faced by the Chinese community, using three generations of the Lim family- Lim Nyonya, Lim BaBa and Lim Xiba- to present their different attitudes towards English and Chinese education, reflecting the impact of the differences in identity created by colonial rule on Malaysian Chinese society and culture at the time. Through the portrayal of the characters and the arrangement of the different fates among the three generations, the novel conveys Fang Beifang's critique of the harm caused by colonial education resulting in family tragedy. Through the characters in the book, Fang Beifang celebrates the progressive concept of foreign languages: holding onto and developing one's own subjectivity also requires serious study of foreign languages. The popularity of Nonya and Baba is because the novel reflects the struggle of every family to make choices and gives an ending that is in line with the people's wishes.
