Non-pure nostalgia - Symbolic metaphor in Red Rose and White Rose

EiLeen Chang (1920-1995), a well-known contemporary writer, is famous for her works of describing the atypical love of urban men and women. In "Red Rose and White Rose", the using of "Rose" as a metaphor symbol skillfully metaphorizes the love view and social value of the nale charactor Zhenbao, meanwhile, it also presents the diversity of the same symbol. Therefore, the multiple metaphors of the symbol becomes the first exploration of the paper. In addition, it is worth noting that when describing the love story of Zhenbao, EiLeen Chang transcended the established time frame and built a "nostalgic" road of memory through back, through repeated symbols, echoing the American scholar Svetlana Boym's expanded nostalgia in "The Future of Nostalgia" (2001), and jumped out of nostalgia, resulting in the possibility of rebirth after reflection. Therefore, inspired by Boym's discussion, this paper takes the nostalgia symbol in "Red Rose and White Rose" as the core, and is divided into four parts : The first part organizes the nostalgia in Chang's works, which is classified as classical memory and vision reproduction. The second part discusses the multiple meanings of the "rose" symbol, and the link between Zhenbao's particular sexual addiction and his unfinished first love. The third part discusses the repeated exposure: Britain / Shanghai, windows, and cars as nostalgia space traversing. Finally, from the nostalgic journey back, a way of reflection is summarized as the conclusion.
