Red Rose, White Rose, a novella written by Eileen Chang (1920-1995), seems to be a story about two women's fight for the love of main protagonist, Zhenbao. However, the tragic denouement of Zhenbao is caused by himself because he follows the old pattern of social values to abandon his true love and get married with one he has no understanding basis. The similar structure of the love tragedy also presents from Biography of Yingying, a legend of Tang Dynasty; in order to pursue social values and identifications, the two main characters all abandon their lovers. On the content of the story, the author thinks that Eileen Chang actually uses irony to carry on the thought of Dream of the Red Chamber. The essay would comparison Red Rose, White Rose with Biography of Yingying to discuss the influences of traditional morality on men's spouse-selection, how the values of the old times continue to tangle people of new era, how the characters face to their dilemmas, and the profound values behind Red Rose, White Rose.
