An Analysis of Sonnets from 'The Portuguese (No.43)' from the Perspective of Defamiliarization of Russian Formalism

Shklovsky's "Defamiliarization Theory" is one of the important theories of Russian formalism. Defamiliarization aims at breaking the automation and mechanization, leading readers enter the non-daily image world that the author creates by the literary text, so that readers can temporarily forget the real world corresponding to the things described in the text, and reach the stage of artistic aesthetic. Poetry is art. As Susan Langer mentioned, every word written by a poet must create the basic illusion of poetry, as is the case in Elizabeth Browning's Sonnets From The Portuguese (No.43). The defamiliarized images and theme of love in the poem vividly interpret the poet's extremely sincere emotion, and the meaning of love images in the poem is increased layer by layer, leading the readers to understand the deeper emotion beyond the emotion implied by the images.
