Kerouac was a representative of "The Beat Generation", his classic autobiographical novel On the Road has been well received by folks. The retranslation of literary works is ubiquitous in the history of translation and has been verified in the publication process of this book. It was published in the United States in 1957, while it appeared in China as an abridged edition in 1962. The co-translated version was published in 1990, but there were still some deletions. It was not until 1998 that the full version of Wen Chu'an came out, clarifying the rigid concepts in the previous translations, allowing Chinese readers to see the whole picture of the novel. At the end of 2019, the author participated in the retranslation of this book, taking into account the focus of traditional translation studies and opposing the either-or view of translation dualism. This paper unveils that translational action is a continuum of various translation methods, and the two ends of the continuum correspond to the two poles of the translation category. In the practice of literary translation, a balance point in the translation category should be found out. The continuum of translation can overcome the disadvantages of the dualism of translation and provide a new perspective for the translation practice of literary works.
